Other Committee · Meeting of July 29, 2026
Westwood unveiled a smaller, cheaper redesign for Fire Station 1 and floated three possible building sites. Town Administrator Connor Reed and Fire Chief Stephen Lund told residents the 1948 station is unsafe and its temporary tent is "only a temporary Band-Aid," while architect Greg Joint of KBA said the new program cuts square footage 19 percent, to just under 30,000 square feet. Estimated costs range from $33.9 million to $43.7 million across the High Street, Deerfield Avenue and Starbucks-lot sites, well below the $44.9 million a rebid of last year's rejected design would cost today.
Resident Ada Drone said she was "shocked" the Select Board plans to vote Monday, August 3, on debt exclusion ballot language before the FS1 committee picks a site on August 7. Officials said the ballot measure names no site or dollar figure, with a final budget expected this fall ahead of required town meeting and ballot votes.
