Commission Reviews Deerfield Fire Station Design
Other Committee · Meeting of August 26, 2026
Westwood's Finance and Warrant Commission got an early look at a scaled-back, $33.9 million to $40 million Fire Station 1 plan for the Deerfield Avenue site ahead of a November 3 debt-exclusion vote. Select Board Chair Marianne LeBlind Cummings said the board and the FS1 steering committee unanimously backed Deerfield over the existing High Street station and a third site, after voters rejected a prior, larger proposal in 2025. Town Administrator Connor Reed said the redesigned building cuts the program about 19 percent, to roughly 30,000 square feet, though he cautioned a smaller building "is not automatically" a proportional cost cut given rising per-square-foot construction costs.
Resident Kathy Wallace warned in public comment that firefighters had "little, if any, input" into the 50 percent design and that 32 parking spaces would be lost. Commission members voted 11-0 to approve June 15 minutes; no FS1 vote was taken.
