Westwood Picks Deerfield Site For New Fire Station

Other Committee · Meeting of August 7, 2026

Westwood's Fire Station 1 Steering Committee and Select Board unanimously picked the former Deerfield Elementary School site for a new Fire Station 1. Chair Ford Spaulding said the committee weighed three finalists, the current 637 High Street site, Deerfield, and a parcel known as "the land behind Starbucks," using a matrix covering costs, operational needs, and community feedback before recommending Deerfield on a unanimous vote. The Select Board then unanimously accepted the recommendation and voted unanimously to extend the steering committee's charge through November 3, 2026, converting it into an FS1 Advisory and Communications Committee.

Spaulding said Deerfield lets the current station keep operating during construction and called the site "potentially... the least costly of all three options." The project needs special town meeting approval this fall and faces a debt exclusion ballot vote on November 3.
